HOME SLEEP TESTING – WHAT IS IT? Testing for sleep apnea in the comfort of your own home has many advantages over being tested overnight in a “sleep lab”. There is less disruption to your normal sleep because you are in your own environment and can sleep in any position. The devices used require fewer electrodes and wires than the attended overnight sleep test called Polysomnography (PSG). Studies have shown that sleeping in a sleep lab requires some getting used to; and sometimes two nights of testing are required - this has not been the case with home sleep testing devices. See the results of our studies here.
Several devices can be used to test at home, some are more reliable than others. The Holter-Oximeter is a new device. The device continuously records your heart and blood oxygen levels through 5 adhesive sensors placed on your chest and one on your finger. The sensors are connected to a small electronic device the size of a calculator. You will sleep with the device and remove it the next day. An automated report is generated and determines your level of obstructive sleep apnea. Several studies have been published showing that the Holter-Oximeter can identify patients with significant obstructive sleep apnea in 100% of cases. (Click here to see full text of research articles) Another device is the WatchPAT which is worn on the wrist like a watch and monitors the pulse and oxygen levels in the blood through finger sensors. This is also a very reliable test in adults, but cannot yet be used in children.
Is home sleep testing covered by my insurance? Many health plans are covering the cost of home sleep testing. The test needs to be prescribed by a doctor, and you must meet certain criteria to have the test done. If you have filled out the questionnaires on our web site this may be enough information.
