Dr. Jordan Stern has conducted a study of "Effectiveness of Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea." In his research, new mandibular advancement device (MAD) was found to be an effective first-line treatment for patients with mild, moderate, and severe sleep apnea.
Patients had excellent compliance rates, similar to or better than CPAP, and an equal or better MDA of 56.7% compared to literature values of 50% for CPAP.

What does the video appointment achieve?

All our appointments are via telemedicine (video). In your first video appointment, you will speak with a sleep specialist to discuss your symptoms and whether you might benefit from sleep apnea screening. You will learn about the at-home sleep study and evaluation process.

You will have a a follow-up video appointment to review the results of your sleep test and discuss treatment options. If you choose treatment with an oral appliance, you can either go to one of our facilities for a digital scan of your teeth or we’ll ship a home impression (mold) kit. Our staff will assist you with the dental impressions during a scheduled virtual visit.

Is an oral device right for you?

Your gum and teeth health are important factors. You must have at least one healthy molar on each side of the upper and lower jaw. Your gums must be in good shape (no excessive swelling, bleeding or pain,) and you must be able to open your mouth without pain in the jaw joint. (If you have pain from grinding your teeth, an oral device will protect them.) You can’t get a device during treatment with invisaligns, braces, or dental implants, or other major dental work. However, you can get an oral device after completing the dental work.

Does insurance cover oral devices?

BlueSleep is in network with medical insurance. Our Billing Team contacts your insurance company to get a pre-approval for treatment and will inform you of any copays, coinsurance or deductibles required by your contract. Insurance requires a positive test for sleep apnea to pay for an oral device. We’ve made testing easy and affordable with a 3-night, home sleep test covered by insurance.

How to get an oral device?

Make an appointment with a BlueSleep specialist. Be sure to fill out the questionnaire before your appointment. Take a 3-night home sleep test. If the results are positive, we’ll recommend an oral device (or CPAP). Our dentist will scan your teeth or send you a do-it-yourself teeth mold. Once your device arrives, we’ll help you adjust your device till it feels right.

How long would the oral appliance take to work & after how long could I stop wearing it?

The beneficial results of wearing an oral device are generally immediate and continue over an adjustment period of 2-4 weeks under the supervision of the BlueSleep Team. Patients take a follow-up home sleep test six weeks after receiving the device to evaluate the treatment. The oral appliance prevents sleep apnea, so we recommend you always use it when sleeping.
